Heckington Windmill is near the Heckington bypass, follow the brown signs that you'll see on the A17 between Newark and Kings Lynn. It is the only 8-sailed windmill left in the whole of Western Europe and is well worth a visit. Built in 1830, it originally had only the traditional four sails but lost them during a storm. When the windmill was repaired they put in the extra 4-sails and it carried on as a working windmill right upto the year 1946 but then lapsed from commercial work. It languished for almost 40 years until it was restored into working order in 1986.
Today, the windmill is worked by the Friends of Heckington Mill and the shop sells both locally ground flour and various souvenirs. Part of the ground floor of the mill contains displays and a video.
