But coal mining was definitely on the increase. Freeminers, exercising their ancient rights, now had well over a hundred pits, producing nearly two thousand tons of coal each week - to sell at four shillings a ton! Water was the age-old problem. Shafts rarely exceeded twenty five yards and water had to be raised by hand in buckets.
