The Forest of Dean.

Bygone Days

Background - Dean.

Until the Fourteenth Century the Forest was indiscriminately known as Dene but after that time Dean prevails.

The Forest, or Dene, is not mentioned in the Doomsday Book but there was a manor of Dene held by Saxons for "guarding the forest". "Dene" denotes a wooded area in which swine are fed, although others say it comes from the word "arden", meaning a wood.

The manor was divided in the fourteenth century into Dean Parva (Littledean) and Dean Magna (Mitcheldean).
