Bygone Days

Forest Folklore - 1795 A bad year for Drybrook.

Later Lydbrook miners seized a wagon laden with wheat and stored it in a barn over the week-end with the intention of selling it. On Monday morning a magistrate arrived with a troop of cavalry; reloaded the grain on to wagons and set off escorting it back to Gloucester.

About 60 Foresters followed and became threatening. The magistrate ordered the arrest of the ring-leader who proved to be William Stallard, a notorious deer poacher and highwayman who had earlier organised an attack on Longhope Mill. He was subsequently hanged the following year for horse stealing.
