The "Big Freeze" of 1947.

In fact, of course, the towns and villages were worse hit by the snow. Or rather, the drifts of snow. Doors couldn't be opened until a path had been cut through.

Here, outside Frank Bowdler's Fish & Chip Shop you can start to see the size of the problem they had. If you cut a path, where to put the snow ? Not in the road ... not on the pavement ... Ah, well no traffic was moving anyway so in the road it went.
