Introduction

The Forest of Dean is an exceptional example of what British forestry can achieve - valued by local people and tourists, producing a sustainable timber crop and containing areas of high biodiversity. Its beauty, however, hides some of the worst industrial dereliction in Britain's history. As one of England's largest productive forests, it is big enough to offer secluded, quiet corners, despite the huge number of visitors, whilst at the same time providing for fragile wildlife.
