Time-Line of the Life & Death of
Napoleon Bonaparte.


1769 15th August. Napoleon Bonaparte born in Ajaccio, Corsica.
1779 17th May. Napoleon begins study at the Royal Military Academy.
1784 17th October. Enrolls in the Ecole Militaire.
The Storming of the Bastille - 14th July, 1789.
1785 28th October. Graduates from Ecole Militaire with
          the rank of second lieutenant in the artillery.
          3rd November. Stationed in Valence.
1789 14th July. Paris mob storms the Bastille.
1792 May-October. While in Paris with his regiment, Napoleon
          witnesses the storming of the Tuileries Palace and the
          dethroning of the French King, Louis XVI.
1793 13th June. Accused of being too pro- French, Napoleon and his
          family flee their household in Corsica.
          22nd December. For his courage at an internal French battle at
          Toulon, Napoleon receives the new rank of brigadier general.

1794 9th-20th August. Napoleon is imprisoned under suspicion of
          being a Jacobin and a supporter of Robespierre.
1795 13th June. Napoleon is promoted to
          General of the Army of the West.
          5th October. The government assigns Napoleon the task of
          suppressing civil strife and rebellion against the Republic.
          15th October. At the home of Paul Francois Barras, a Directory
          member, Napoleon meets Rose de Beauharnais (Josephine).
          16th October. Barras helps Napoleon win promotion to
          Commander of the Army of the Interior.

1796 2nd March. Napoleon is given command of the
          French army in Italy.
Napoleon marries Josephine Malmaison.
          9th March. Napoleon marries Josephine.
          11th March. Italian campaign against Austria begins.
          10th May. Napoleon wins the Battle of Lodi.
          17th November. Napoleon wins the Battle of Arcole.
1797 14th January. Napoleon wins the Battle of Rivoli.
          17th October. Napoleon draws up the Treaty of Campo- Formio
          with Austria.
          5th December. He returns to Paris a hero.

1798 19th May. Napoleon begins his Egyptian campaign.
          2nd July. Fall of Alexandria.
          21st July. Wins Battle of the Pyramids against Mamelukes in Egypt.
          24th July. Fall of Cairo.
Nelson destroys Napoleon's fleet at the battle of Aboukir.
          1st August. Under the command of Admiral Nelson, the
          British fleet destroys the French navy in the Battle of Aboukir.
1799 23rd August. Receiving news of turmoil in France, Napoleon
          returns to Paris.
          9th-10th November. Following a coup d'etat, Napoleon becomes
          First Consul of the new French government.
1800 19th February. Sets up a household in Tuileries Palace.
          20th May. Napoleon leads his army across the Alps in the
          Second Italian Campaign.

          14th June. Wins Battle of Marengo against Austria.
1801 9th February. Treaty with Austria signed at Luneville.
          15th July. Signing of the Concordat between France &
          Rome ends schism between the French government and the
          Catholic Church.
          24th December. Napoleon escapes an assassination attempt.

1802 25th March. Treaty of Amiens signed with Britain.
          1st May Napoleon restructures French educational system.
          4th August. New constitution adopted, making Napoleon
          First Consul for life.
The U.S. purchases the Louisiana Territory from France.
1803 3rd May. France sells Louisiana territory to U.S.
          (Actually signed: Saturday April 30, 1803).
          16th May. England violates Treaty of Amiens.

1804 18th May. Senate proclaims Napoleon Emperor.
          2nd December. Napoleon crowns himself Emperor in
          Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris.
1805 17th March. Napoleon is crowned King of Italy in Milan.
          21st October. The Battle of Trafalgar marks yet another naval
          defeat to the British under the command of Admiral Nelson.
          2nd December. Victory in the Battle of Austerlitz against Austria &
          Russia.

1806 30th March. Napoleon names his brother, Joseph Bonaparte,
Napoleon defeats the Russians in the Battle of Friedland.
          King of Naples, and appoints
          other family members to various other posts.
1807 14th June. Defeats the Russians at the Battle of Friedland.
          7th July. Czar Alexander I makes peace with
          Napoleon in the Treaty of Tilsit.
          22nd July. Napoleon creates the Grand Duchy of Warsaw (Poland),
          to be overseen by France.
          30th November. Beginning of French occupation of Portugal.
          Joachim Murat to lead an army in Spain.

Murat suppresses the Spanish revolt of 2nd May, 1808.
1808 20th February. Napoleon sends the French marshal
          2nd May. The French army under Murat
          suppress the Spanish revolt.
          4th June. Napoleon names Joseph Bonaparte
          King of Spain, and Murat King of Naples.
1809 15th December. Napoleon divorces Josephine.
1810 2nd April. Napoleon marries the
          Archduchess of Austria, Marie-Louise.
1811 20th March. Napoleon's son born, referred to as
          the "King of Rome".

1812 24th June. Russian Campaign begins.
Napoleon's Russian Campaign ends in disaster as the Russian forces retreat and Winter takes its toll of the ill-equipped French forces.
          14th September. Grand Army enters Moscow to find the city
          abandoned and set aflame by the inhabitants; retreating in the
          midst of a frigid winter, the army suffers devastating losses.
          18th December. Napoleon returns to Paris.
1813 17th March. Prussia declares war on France.
          21st June. The French fall to Spain in the Battle of Vitoria.

1814 January. Anti-French coalition army enters France.
          30th-31st March. Paris falls.
          2nd Apri. Senate proclaims the end of the Empire & Napoleon's
          wife and son flee Paris.
          4th April. Napoleon abdicates his rule and Louis XVIII,
Napoleon exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena - where he subsequently dies.
          a Bourbon, is restored to the French throne.
          4th May 4. Napoleon is exiled to Elba
          & his wife and son take refuge in Vienna.
1815 1st March. Escapes from Elba and Napoleon
          returns to South France.
          7th March. Napoleon rallies the French army.
Napoleon defeated at Waterloo by Wellington and Blücher.
          20th March. Louis XVIII flees, Napoleon
          takes control, begins "Hundred Days" campaign.
          18th June. Defeated in the Battle of Waterloo by the
          British and Prussians, led by Wellington and Blücher.
          22nd June. Abdicates for the second time.

Napoleon exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena - where he subsequently dies.
          16th October. Napoleon is exiled to Saint Helena.
1821 5th March. Napoleon dies at Saint Helena.
